All colonial powers fight to the bitter end AHC

Well, if France wanted to "kill everybody" I'm sure they could have kept their African colonies.

It's kind of a hollow victory to keep your colonies when you not only killed the guerillas, but all your native loyalists too.

Not only 1961, but also 1960 (les barricades), and 1958 (les paras), and also 1962 and Petit Clamart. It essentially boiled down to the fact that the French army was fixed on three things
a) they had military won the Algerian war
b) they had paid a high price to that victory
c) Algeria was part of France as much as Normandy or Corsica.
Mission accomplished.
