Alix of Hesse by the Rhine dies in 1895

Not sure if this has been asked before, so apologies if it has, but what consequences would there be for Russia if Alix of Hesse, the wife of Tsar Nicholas II died in childbirth? Say she dies in 1895 after giving birth to Grand Duchess Olga, does Nicholas remarry? I presume he would as Tsar be pressured into remarrying, who might he marry and what effects might this have?

A candidacy that would be pressed by some people close to Tsar is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Xenia_of_Montenegro
Already Orthodox, so no need for conversion, her sisters are married in Russian court, and comes from fertile family.

Though the Balkan Tsarina would bring its own set of baggage, by 1914 Nicholas TTL may well be with a healthy teenage heir.

Oh now that would be very interesting, and this is very true, I imagine Nicholas would always have to keep one eye on the Balkans to make sure his wife's family doesn
't get shafted.

And of course if he has a healthy sn or sons, Rasputin likely disappears from history

Ironically, Rasputin was introduced to the court by Xenia's sisters OTL, but since the progeny is healthy, he'll be an exotic curiosity, a "Siberian freak monk" and is unlikely to gain any sort of political influence.

Oh now that is very interesting. Why do I have this imagine of Nicholas looking on in some sort of bemused horror at the man

If we don't go with Xenia (who is a good choice, but she apparently chose to remain unmarried, which could mean she rejects Nicky's proposal) here are some other options.

Elisabeth of Waldeck Pyrmont (1873), sister of Queen Emma and the Duchess of Albany
Duchess Elsa of Wurttemberg or her twin sister Olga (1876)
Princess Pauline of Wurttemberg (1877)
Alexandrine of Mecklenburg Schwerin (1879), OTL Queen of Denmark
Duchess Jutta of Mecklenburg Strelitz (1880), OTL CP of Montenegro and thus converted to Orthodoxy
Margaret of Connaught (1882), OTL CP of Sweden

Hmm, I do think Margaret of Connaught would be a fascinating choice, it could be part of the alliance system between Britain and Russia and France? Otherwise I think Olga of Wurttemberg would be quite interesting

Well, TTL the groom is of much higher rank that what was offered to her OTL, and she may be pressed into this marriage "for the family's well-being sake". But other that these offers, I like Margaret, as Victoria would rather like to see another of her granddaughters sit on the Russian throne.

If Margaret marries Nicky it will have to be in some sort of love match like Alix or family scheming from Aunt Alexandra, because Victoria herself liked Nicky but was very sceptical of Russia. She thought it was backwards and the fact that it "killed Alicky" (who was her favorite grandchild) won't win them any brownie points.

Even if the lass died in childbirth?

I like it, I think the revolution ain't guaranteed, nor is the first world war in it's otl form, so definitely going to be interesting
