What if instead of heading east to destroy the Pursians, Alexander instead heads west? or he survivies past his 33rd birthday returns home and then sets out to expand his empire to the West??

I don't really know what would happen. Do you???

My guess? While Alexander is gallivanting around Europe, the Persians are preparing. When Alexander returns, he finds that Darius III has build a Fire Temple on the Acropolis.

The Question is Why, He already has Eygpt, All that is left in the West is the Italiote League, which he can have for the Asking.
And, Carthage and colonies.
Oh yes there are a few minor Latin Cities in Italy, with no Power or Riches, Nothing to temp a Conqueror.

OTOH To the east is Persia [long time Enemy], and beyond that is India, Cathay, and the River Ocean,
All prizes to bring Fame and Glory.

If he did, Persia may attack his empire when he's off campaining in Italy or North Africa. Of course I hate this since then there's a chance the Roman Republic won't exist and a chance for Persia to turn into a uber power again.

Probally a better scenario would have been what if Alexander had lived? After returning from his conquests in the east he wanted to then expand his empire to the west. Unfortuantly he got a nosebleed and died.

I suspect that after all his sucesses in the east he had become a bit of a meglomaniac. So conquering to the west would have appealed to him anyway. Remember it was only because his men and generals were growing homesick that he agreed to halt his expansion East and reurn home.
