After WW1, the French formed the Alawite State, or Alouites. However, in 1930 this became the Sanjak of Latakia, and in 1937 it was merged with Syria. What if it had remained separate, and on Syrian independence became a separate country, like Lebanon? Note that several political leaders in Syria, including the al-Assads, came from Latakia...
