Al Haig: Why Didn't He Go Anywhere?

In terms of being presidential, Alexander Haig looked like a perfect candidate on paper. He had name recognition, he was a prestigious military man, and he had a long record of public service across three Republican administrations, as well as some private sector experience. But when he ran for the presidency, he did not break single digits against Bush and was a dead last candidate. Taking that into account, why did Haig fail so thoroughly in his presidential ambitions?

He was an arrogant git with near zero interpersonal skills...allegedly.

Pretty much. Classic senior officer. Used to giving and taking orders, not really big on flexible and diplomatic toward subordinates (which will hurt you in the military, there are so many ways to &*^% a guy without it ever being apparent, but will flat kill you in the civilian world of DC, where every third restaurant booth has a reporter just waiting to by a nice supper for a anonymous source).

Not to mention that to many people, the first time they heard of him was "I'm in charge" when Reagan was shot.

That looked really, really, bad.
