Skylab-B with the RV-102 Freedom return capsule docked at the Power and Docking Node as part of a long duration on-orbit storage test to validate its use as a station lifeboat, 1988. (Actual) JAXA proposals from the late 2000s to early 2010s: the SELENE (Kaguya) lunar orbiter probe in 2007 was meant to be followed by the SELENE-2 lander and rover in 2015 (but was cancelled by that year).

SELENE-X was a placeholder name for a more advanced mission or missions, such as large habitats, robots, or sample return - meant to launch in the early 2020s.

This was to prepare for Japan's participation in an international crewed lunar base later in the 2020s.
