I'm interested in the number of times America could have had a president either decided by the House of Representatives or deciding whether or not to keep an acting president. For example if the 1836 election was thrown to the House(which it would've been if Harrison got Pennsylvania) or if the Lincoln assassination also managed to kill Andrew Johnson leading to Lafayette S Foster as the acting president.

When it comes to an acting president, I know that if its not already an election year there's a special election later that year to determine if they are kept president, however I don't know what the differences between a normal election would be. And who's viable to be chosen in that election?

When it's thrown to the House of Representatives, how should a realistic ATL determine who they ultimately choose? How might that affect the running mate? Can a third party ever potentially use this in their advantage to win an election?
