I'll get in on this, sure. It's 2 AM here though, so I won't be putting detailed info up until proper morning. Until then, I reserve the IOTL US states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Michigan. Plan on repeating my prior bid. :p

Please do not submit a second nation for the present. We are trying to let everyone get a first state in. If we have openings we will likely open registration up for second nations.

Great Lakes Republic
Nation Name: Great Lakes Republic (Referred to as the GLR in everyday conversation).
Capital: Chicago
Other Major Cities: Lincoln, Stevenson, Taft.
Population: 56 Million
Official Languages: English (language of government) and German (most spoken in Minnesota and Wisconsin).
Government Type: Federated Republic.
President: Richard Durbin
Speaker: Amy Klobuchar
National Federation: Great Lakes Federation
National Stadium: Lincoln Field
Team Nickname: The North Coasters
History: Founded in 1870, the GLR has long had uneasy relations with its neighbor, the Confederate States of America. Both were founded as a result of the American Civil War. This uneasiness has translated into an excellent if at times uneven rivalry, with the GLR holding a clear advantage in head to head matches between the two countries. Founded by settlers from what was then the United States, the nation ethnically is composed mostly of Irish, German, and English immigrants. There is also a large African American minority in the larger cities such as Chicago, where refugees from the CSA often flock in search of work. The Great Lakes Federation has offered any and all immigrants from that country the opportunity to play for the GLR national team, citing their common history as part of the USA as well as human rights abuses in the CSA. Unsurprisingly, this has heightened the rivalry between the two sides, and matches are often contentious, with physical play threatening to turn into outright brawls.

Well there goes my 'Sardinia-Piedmont extends to the Rhône' idea :p
@Red Arturoist I see your United Germany/ies has claimed Luxembourg already, are you willing to switch it out for say Friesland so I might use it?

I would be willing to give up Luxembourg. I did think of it as an integral part of the "neutral buffer state", but it isn't as integral as Alsace-Lorraine or the Rhineland.
