The prospect of Scandinavians taking to the seas once more and building colonial empires is an old one. About as old, in fact, as the 1630s, if one considers New Sweden, established during the 30 Years War. So with a POD around 1638 when the colony was established, how do we secure their success, and then enable Sweden to grow to something like this? What would the impacts on other powers be? Would they favor the french, due to competition with Britain in the north sea and their American colonies (assuming France still barely settles abroad, meaning that Britain remains the bigger threat), or would Britain be able to sway them somehow?

This kinda looks like one of those “random dots of paint” kind of colonial empires, a little bit here, a little there. I can’t really see how it’d all be kept together, especially when Sweden doesn’t have more of an Atlantic presence.

Yeah, I think Sweden definitely needs to annex Norway and/or Denmark. Otherwise, they can be cut off from their colonial empire by planting a sufficiently strong naval squadron north of Copenhagen.

admittedly, some level of "they get the scraps" was involved, since unless i gave them denmark or norway I knew they couldn't really be a major power. the ideas was basically "the strongest minor empire"

The problem is that Sweden will have to be able to project power all over the globe to hold onto territory as spread-out as this, and given their larger landholdings they'd need even more resources on the home front than they did iotl. They'd be competing with Britain, Spain and France in the New World, the Netherlands in the Indies, Portugal in Africa etc. Holding on against either one of them would be difficult, all of them at once is however an order of magnitude worse and probably impossible, especially given how Sweden only has 1 major Atlantic port in this scenario.

So if theey held norway or Jutland it would be one thing, but without, they're effectively boxed in too much?

I don't think they could justifiably allocate the resources needed to hold those Pacific territories. They certainly won't be able to defend them from, say, Britain or the Netherlands. I'd probably sell those off and focus on America, or sell America and focus on Asia, but I don't see what worth those colonies are this early. Especially Papua.

**you go replied after 7th month of this post**

so it has been a long-dead post here since let's talk about southeast Asia facts
is if siam was been colonized in the late Ayutthaya Period and unite the Malay peninsula if not, don't answer question 1
here some question
1. if siam was colonized will Cambodia king try to make diplomatic relations with the Swedish?
2. will taksin rebel anganist the sweden?
3. will restored Toungoo/Koubang will end up conflict on the Sweden colony?
that's the question I asked lets me put some sentences here
if siam was colonized, Cambodia would likely prevent colonialism since they became a french protectorate to prevent siam raids they probably still control their delta since if they have economic relations with Sweden trade and the Vietnamese cant fully invade Cambodia since they have guns from swedish
comment under this reply if I mistake some of this theory
