AHC : Widespread tatooing in western civilisation.

OTL, Tatoos were either an infamous mark (marking slaves, by exemple) and/or despised by ruling elites.

Eventually it went under a religious ban (while it wouldn't be the first time a religious ban would have been totally ignored) and it didn't reappeared before the XVIIIth century.

What would have been needed for tatooing still a common feature in western civilisation (either greco-roman or germano-roman).?

Which changes would have led to not identifying with slavery or paganism?

I heard Copts and Ottoman-era Croatian Christians were tattoing themselves crosses and other christian symbols, in a context of oppression.

Maybe make the first Christians tatoo themselves christian symbols (fishes, crosses or lambs) during the Roman persecutions.

This tradition is later kept by the monks and othr religious wanting to mark their attackment to God.
