AHC/WI: US a participant in the Scramble for Africa

The Perdicanis Incident blows up into a US-Moroccan crisis with US marines and sailors occupying the government buildings. Ultimately leading to a de facto US protectorate (handy way of avoiding further Franco-German tensions.

I wonder if they'd run it like the Phillipines?

(Notice I have avoided the old chestnut of a US Congo which has been done to death elsewhere on this site).

How about an early American freeing of slaves, leaving African-minded slaves to imperialize Africa with far more aggressiveness than OTL?

I do like that, although as AHGeek said it's more of a Liberia wank.

Definitely needs a timeline. With the US sponsoring this 'Liberian Empire' as an extension of American influence in Africa. At some point, if the 'Empire' becomes too successful, there'll have to be an agreement with Britain and others as it sets too dangerous a precedent for the European Empires (ie, India or South Africa etc).

That would be more of a Liberiawank than it would be US colonies in Africa, but that is a good idea...

I was thinking something more along the lines of this:

America, in a quick and foreign-assisted civil war, crushes the South and bans slavery in the early nineteenth century. The Northern voters, however, don't really want the freed slaves to take their jobs and steal their chickens and whatnot, so, in an effort to appease the southern populace, form comittees to move slaves to Africa, a final victory over the plantation owners, who would much rather keep the blacks around as sharecroppers.

The slaves, some of them African-born leftovers from the alive trade's legality, respond to their freedom with thoughts of returning to their roots of true freedom, and emigrate en masse from a postwar environment extremely negative to blacks.

They, like the Japanese, embraced Western strategies if not Western culture, and dress Americanized. They would quickly take over black African societies, acting as emblematic of the potential of black power, and rule forcefully over many natives.

The African Question as to what to do with these rampant black communities finally concluded that these Africans were, as citizens colonizing native peoples, within the American tradition, and Negro West Africa was declared an American territory.

Thus, an African Manifest Destiny mirrored the American one, giving itself the duty to civilize Africa and defend it against (most) European aggression. At pressure from the American Negro Party, the Monroe Doctrine is revised to include West Africa. American Negroes are increasingly seen as allies and fellow Americans. The Republican president is criticized by Southerner as the "Nigger President", when he supported England in the Napoleonic Wars and allied Ethiopia, leading many American blacks to fight the French in the Hayti War, while playing an integral role in the siezure of New Orleans.

I don't know enough about American history, but the idea would continue with American immigration to Africa, and eventually the formation of African states as Hawaii and Alaska go along similar lines.
