What would be the effects of America establishing client states in the various nations in occupied from the early 1900's to the 1930's? How would the US change if Haiti, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic were it's client states?
Is this a DBWI?
"While it is clear that Nicaragua's status as a client state had developed long before the Somozas took power, it is also true that Anastasio Somoza Garcia and his two sons did much to refine that undignified relationship. Throughout most of the Somoza period, Nicaraguan and U.S. foreign policy were virtually indistinguishable. As bitter Anastasio Somoza Debayle remarked shortly after his overthrow: "I stood back to back with the U.S. and gave my ally all the support I could muster.... [No] president anywhere supported the policies of the United States more devoutly than I did.... No such loyalty existed anywhere."
"The relationship was one of mutual benefit. The Somozas tailored their foreign policy to the interests of their international protector, and the United States, in turn, lavished favors on its client. Throughout the whole affair, the interested parties whose aspirations and needs were consistently ignored were the citizens of Nicaragua. U.S. personnel occasionally may have experienced some queasiness over the nature of the system they were supporting, but as Franklin Delano Roosevelt is said to have remarked at one point, "Somoza might be an S.O.B., but he is our S.O.B."
