AHC/WI: The USA splits right after the revolutionary war

Well, the Articles of Confederation were pretty unworkable, and almost impossible to amend significantly. If the Constitutional Convention fails, and it's pretty easy for that to happen given the differing demands of large and small states, federalists vs states rights types, etc. If e.g. Rhode Island insists on the AoC amending formula (unanimity) for the acceptan e of the new Constitution (and the Convention's mandate was to Amend, not discard the AoC), they would have held the Convention hostage for concessions that the bigger states wouldnt be able to swallow.

At some point, you will get two states going to war, and then the whole United part of the US goes out the window. I'd expect there to end up being about 5 confederations, rather than two, though.

Yeah, I imagine a New England Confederation, a republic of NY, PA, and NJ (possibly Delaware at some point), Greater Virginia (including NC, KY, and TN), and a "Carolina" of SC and GA. Later on, there'll almost certainly be Louisiana, Texas, California, Oregon, etc. Maryland I see as being like Belgium (a buffer state).

Well if this happens I'd certainly imagine a stronger Mexico is possible. So maybe California and Texas would probably depend on if they could get enough immigrants to revolt successfully. And in the North if there's ever an 1812 style war and Britain gets the south on its side it may ask for a few concessions. I guess even without the Louisiana purchase happening there'd still be colonisation but I guess it'd really depend on the finances of the various party's involved.

If the colonies fragmented after independence would Britain be as disinclined to retake at least some of them. They wouldn't be strong enough independently to prevent another coloniser taking them, nor would they eventually be able to act as Britain's 'policeman' in the area to discourage other european involvement in the Americas.

Perhaps a British invasion may help to unify the disunited states?

Maryland and Delaware were run by tobacco planters and would thus want to throw themselves in with Virginia. Kentucky and Tennessee I can see breaking off. Or at least wanting to.
