AHC/WI: The North Secedes? And fails?

I have to be careful how I word this...

I'm no Civil War expert by any means but what has to happen to cause the C.S.A. to stretch from sea to shining sea, effectively replacing the U.S.A. as we know it? Certainly there was NO motivation for the C.S.A. to conquer the U.S. not to mention the lack of resources... but could they keep the North?

If a powerful enough states rights/pro-slavery U.S. President or line of presidents becomes elected, is it plausible that the North ever secedes from their Southern oppressors? Would Britain and France still support the South?

And if so, what is the result of the North's failure?

Just spit balling here. Let me know what you think.

I'm...not sure what you mean here. The "North" has overwhelming resources on its side. Short of grotesque incompetence by said side (to the point of farce) and "Southern" brilliance, it can achieve independence from any Southern-only US.

As for Britain and France supporting the South: No. To the extent they supported the South it was harming the US, not picking regions.
