AHC/WI: The Chinese Republic survives

Could the Republic of China stablished in 1911 survive, without falling prey to warlordism or depotism (or at least retaining trappings of a democratic system). It has to control at least part of Mainland China, Taiwan doesn't count.

The easiest way is a Nationalist victory in the Civil War. Have the Communist leadership wiped out during the Long March, and the Nationalists will likely win any post-WWII Civil War. From there, it totters along as a neutral in the Cold War until it liberalizes sometime after Chiang's death.

It would remain a near-fascist dictatorship until any such liberalization. Preventing Chiang's dictatorship is much harder and would require an earlier POD.

Sun-Yat-Sen doesn't die as early. manages to merge the Communist and Nationalist parties. When he dies someone other than Chiang takes over shit does not proceed to get fucked up. If his death is delayed by 2-3 years so that he is dead in 1927-28, you'll see a unified china that has already began democratization. It will become very powerful without 30 years of constant warfare and probably far less corruption than the KMT. They'll mess up the Japanese in '37.
