AHC/WI: Surviving Vietnamese monarchy

The challenge is make the Vietnamese monarchy survived into present-day, how can they do it? How would it impact on Asia with the existence of Vietnamese monarchy?

It can be any dynasty.

The Nguyen Dynasty almost survived but they no longer rule Vietnam, due to several circumstances (French colonialism, Republicans and Communists).

Mostly they didn't survive because Bao Dai had no spine and was happy lounging around and going hunting.
If he had played his cards right (or played at all really), he could have become a figurehead for the nationalists, or even ghe communists.
The fact is, he was entirely useless so there was no point having him around

Now that's pure ASB. The only Communist that tried to put a stunt like that was the Tibetan Phunwang, and the guy got blown out (rightfully) for his attempted alliance with the Dalai Lama.

Maybe communists is slightly pushing it but I seem to remember he was approached. I might very well be wrong.

There's however a way he could have pulled a Louis Capet and become a special citizen, if he had pushed for the liberation of his people. That's what happened in 1945, but he could have stayed as a royal figurehead after, if he had pushed for the people's right, which he didn't do.
It would have been in line with Vietnamese historical tradition of the Nguyen dynasty, a good way to legitimize the communist regime at low cost

Pol Pot next door largely came to power because of the endorsement of Norodam Sihanouk.Sihanouk himself even became the figurehead head of state under the Khmer Rouge for a while.
