This is a fun little idea that I've been bouncing around for a little bit now.
Let's say that at some point in early American history, the territory that is now Michigan(and parts of Indiana + Ohio north of the Maumee and Kankakee Rivers), ends up being split in two, with the more populous southern area being cleaved off into it's own state at some point(with the northern border at about the same latitude as between Ill. + Wis. in the real world). How would this come about, and when is the latest that such could happen, in your view?
The rest of OTL Michigan can either end up with Canada at some point, or can remain American. And bonus points awarded if the POD is at any point after 1812, and said lower part of *Michigan is named "Metropotamia".
