AHC/WI: State of *Metropotamia.

This is a fun little idea that I've been bouncing around for a little bit now.

Let's say that at some point in early American history, the territory that is now Michigan(and parts of Indiana + Ohio north of the Maumee and Kankakee Rivers), ends up being split in two, with the more populous southern area being cleaved off into it's own state at some point(with the northern border at about the same latitude as between Ill. + Wis. in the real world). How would this come about, and when is the latest that such could happen, in your view?

The rest of OTL Michigan can either end up with Canada at some point, or can remain American. And bonus points awarded if the POD is at any point after 1812, and said lower part of *Michigan is named "Metropotamia". :D:cool:

Maybe the federal government could do this during the lead-up to the Toledo War as a way to punish both sides, and create a buffer between the two rival soon-to-be states? The only problem, of course, is that any party doing so is going to fear that they just handes Michigan AND Ohio to the rivals (oddly enough, both Michigan and Ohio went Whig after the Toledo War; much to Jackson's chagrin, since he had favored Ohio in the settlemwnt and had expected them to reciprocate at the polls)

That's an idea. though, in my view, it might possibly require a President other than Jackson and Indiana getting involved in the County Wars somehow(assuming we're going with the exact scenario, that is).

Unlikely after War of 1812 that any parts of the USA east of the western end of Superior and south of the Great Lakes go to Canada. The lakes make too good a boundary.
