AHC/WI: Scottish-Irish Union?

Is there a POD in which Scotland and Ireland are united under their crown's authority before British Acts of Union occur? Some time of personal union without Britain?

This Scotch-Irish Union can still eventually end up in personal Union with Britain, but only after a distinctive cultural tie has time to solidify.

I have no thoughts so go for it.

You'd need some sort of united Ireland to exist, which may be tricky. Not impossible - perhaps Enigmajones's idea.

From there, a personal union depends on the succession laws.

Edit: Freakin' ninja! : p

Well my Irish TL is leaning towards that.

I'm not sure why I never read that, but I'm fixing that mistake now. Wanna pm me some spoilers so I can have my answer tonight?

The search function had one brief thread which mentioned one of Robert du Bruce's brothers fielding a successful invasion of Ireland (I'm assuming to rid it of English) at a battle which they did not specify. I've been googling myself to death trying to find such a thing.

Cheers! I'm reading it now.

Any thoughts as to how victory would satisfy the OP and the cultural outcome of such a thing? Would British personal union still possibly eventually occur?

I'm not sure if Edward (Bruce) is going to be able to handle Ireland in the long term - he's quite unpopular.

As for a British personal union...

Certainly possible. Probable? Anyone's guess. Personal unions are a roll of the dice, really.

Ha, so damn near impossible then? Gotcha!

Seriously though, thanks a tonne.

No problem.

I don't think its a likely or easy scenario, but circumstances arising that are just right isn't implausible.

I mean, who would would have thought an English-Scottish personal union made any more sense in the 14th century?

Whose heir?

OTL Edward Bruce died unmarried. Robert Bruce´s only son died unmarried in 1371 or so, and his daughter´s son inherited as the first Stewart.

Let´s assume that Robert´s children are not directly affected by the butterfly, thus still only son who dies childless in 1371, but Edward marries and is survived by sons some time after his victory at Faughart, and dies natural causes leaving an adult son on Irish throne.

Since Robert Bruce in Edward´s lifetime affirmed that Edward would be his heir ahead of his daughter, how about Edward´s son King of Ireland is the heir after Robert´s son dies childless in 1371, thus personal union from 1371?

I was thinking about Alexander du Bruce, who did inherit some title from his (Edit: illegitimate) father, if I read correctly...

...but this works better. Thanks!

What's the outcome of such a Union past 1371?
