AHC/WI: President Charles Sumner

A double POD - but both on April 14, 18654, might do it - Grant decides to accompany LIncoln to Ford's Theater, and the guy sent to kill Andrew Jhonson decided not to get drunk.

The shock coudl then be enough to kill Seward, who was badly wounded.

Sumner might be the ideal symbol of a Republican Party that - in the special election of 1865 - will be out for ervenge. "The man was was nearly beaten to death, coming back to take on the men who later struck downt he nation's leaders."

Except that had Grant also been at the threatre, the sentry would have been unlikely to leave his post, so they both survive, rather than dying.

Oh, yeah, good point.

Could he have become VP under Grant in 1868 and then Grant die somehow? I recall OTL's VP, Schuyler Colfax, was into some pretty corrupt stuff (then again, not many weren't - yes, Grant's downfall was that he trusted too many people, but there were a lot of corrupt people in general then. It may have been hard for him to find ones to trust.)
