Following an 'interesting' conversation with a friend of mine, who is a staunch Unionist in every sense of the term, I had the notion of how would it be possible for the goal of an independent Scotland to become akin to the tactics and behaviour employed by the Provisional IRA and other militant Irish republican organisations during the late '70s, '80s, and '90s.

I realise that The Troubles were a mixture of a long-standing resentment towards the British government in Ireland, in addition to the religious and ethnic tensions there that went back decades. However, would it be at all possible of a Scottish nationalist movement to begin employing similar tactics, how would it come to pass and would be the effects of this on British politics?

I'm throwing this back as far as possible to keep it 20th Century, though I would imagine we'd need a PoD that dates farther back to create the long-lasting tensions and animosity necessary to generate a more aggressive and anti-UK Scottish nationalist movement.
