AHC/WI: Paramilitary Scottish nationalism

Following an 'interesting' conversation with a friend of mine, who is a staunch Unionist in every sense of the term, I had the notion of how would it be possible for the goal of an independent Scotland to become akin to the tactics and behaviour employed by the Provisional IRA and other militant Irish republican organisations during the late '70s, '80s, and '90s.

I realise that The Troubles were a mixture of a long-standing resentment towards the British government in Ireland, in addition to the religious and ethnic tensions there that went back decades. However, would it be at all possible of a Scottish nationalist movement to begin employing similar tactics, how would it come to pass and would be the effects of this on British politics?

I'm throwing this back as far as possible to keep it 20th Century, though I would imagine we'd need a PoD that dates farther back to create the long-lasting tensions and animosity necessary to generate a more aggressive and anti-UK Scottish nationalist movement.

Possibly have the 1919 Red Clydeside incident turn bloody. Maybe the trade unionists persuade the soldiers at the local barracks to join their ranks and the arriving soldiers from outside Glasgow clash, leading to a massacre of the protesters and mass arrests. The leaders are then executed much like Connolly and his allies for the Easter Rising in Ireland but this inspires a militant resurgence of Scottish nationalism and revolutionary socialism. It would also mean that some of those leaders, like Willie Gallacher and George Buchanan might never enter parliament and provide that outlet for the 'steam' of militancy to be let out and turned towards parliament instead of insurrection. A tradition of militancy and terrorism emerges as a result that develops into something greater during the upheaval of the 60's.
