AHC & WI Pagan Charlemagne?

To keep pagan Franks you should avoid Roman Empire becoming Christian. And this already cause large butterflies and there wouldn't be Charlemagne.

Without his father Pepin the Short being a Christian, Charlemagne would not have be Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.

So a pagan Charlemagne would just be a rouge figure, who is lost in history as nothing worth writing about.

As the title says, try with POD before or during 100 AD...

Prevent Chlodwig I. from converting to Christianity. Wasn´t it a close match after all ? Let the Langobards remain pagan as well. Maybe create a paganphere in Europe, which is more organized like the Christian church. There were projections of Baltic pagans to reorganize their ancient believes as well.

Not really. Him and his predecessor were in really good relations with the Gallo-Roman bishops, that like all bishops in post-imperial Romania, were the main urban agents with counts while the cities were a necessary part of the Late Roman administration kept by Romano-Barbarians kingdoms.

If you add to this the demographical pressure, the romanisation of Barbarians, the geopolitical interests (such as being supported by Gallo-Roman clergy against Homeans), the siege made by Niceans around him (up to his spouse)...

"Close match" doesn't really describe it.

Of course even if it was one, butterflying Christianisation of Franks would have huge repercussion and 350 years afterwards (would it be only Gothic hegemoncy in Gaul being maintained trough Alaric II religious policy), you'd have probably butterflied Peppinid rise, fall of Merovingians and Charlemagne himself.

Technically, we could just get a pagan named Charles to be great. Doesn't even have to be Frankish. ;)
I like this idea, just have a random guy, to kill Pope Zachary and King Pepin the Short to become Emperor of the Pagan Roman Empire.

Chlodwig I, had to convert as his people, were mostly Catholics and he feared being killed by them to place a Catholic king on the throne.

Also Chlodwig I is not related to Charlemagne so it won't affect the family.
Chlodwig was from the dynasty of Merovingian while Charlemagne was of the royal house of Carolingian, which has as one of its ancestors Saint Arnulf of Metz (who is the patron saint of Brewers.)

His grandfather Charles Martel, nicknamed the "the hero of the dark age" and the "champion of the Cross against the Crescent" was offered by Pope Gregory III to become the defender of the Holy See and offered him the Roman consulship. He refused.
That would be a better time line, where Charlemagne becomes Pope Charles I, famous for extended the Papal State's realms to include much of the West, and became the first pope to be called Emperor since the fall of Rome.

Good points made a few posts up. Keeping the Franks Pagan will ensure their destruction, or at the very least prevent them from controlling Gaul. You might end up seeing an alternative Western Empire reboot with a Visigothic Emperor.

A POD that early will butterfly Charlemagne.

A PoD that early will butterfly away the man we know as Charlemagne.

However, a Germanic warleader named Karl could be successful enough that 'Karl der Grosse' (or Old German therefor) could easily happen. He would then be 'Carolus Magnus' in Latin, and something like 'Charlemagne' in the most d/e/b/a/s/e/d/ evolved dialects of Latin....

But, ja. OTL's Charlemagne being pagan is ASB. If he were pagan, he wouldn't be 'the Great'.
