AHC/WI: New Shogunate after Tokugawa?

Is there a possibility that a new shogunate could have taken over after the Tokugawa in the 19th century?

If so, what clans might rule it?

I don't know of any off the top of my head. The Tokugawas did a pretty good job of consolidating power in the two centuries that they ruled. The most powerful non-Tokugawa clans were around Kyushu and they're pretty far from the centers of power in Kanto. Perhaps with an early enough POD you can have the shogunate clan be divided internally like the Plantagenets. Of course this has butterflies down the road since Japan's national isolation might not even happen, and so affects the fall of said shogunate.

In a word: no. By the time the Tokugawa began to fail, more and more nobles began to like the idea of turning to the Emperor and Imperial Court to rule the country. The problem is no noble is gonna want one of their own to ruler over them. The Emperor, on the other hand, was the legal Head of State for Japan, so he was technically already reigning. By the time of the Meiji Restoration, the people and nobility by and large wanted to restore the Emperor, even if he ended up being a figurehead to the various Genro. No one was in any position to become Shogun.

What if the emperor offered the Shogunal position to one of the rebel clans as a compromise to prevent war? The Mori and Satsuma come to mind as candidates others might accept, especially if the emperor is specified to become a more equal partner in the relationship. Doubly if the emperor is strong-willed already, like a surviving Komei.

But WHY would the Emperor give power to a new Shogun when he himself could take power? The Imperial Court was well aware that the majority of the county wanted to return power to the Emperor, so why go against what most of the Nation wants? Plus, creating a new Shogunate WOULD cause a new war. If the Emperor made one clan the Shoguns the other clan would be pissed and no doubt go to war. And again, a strong-willed Emperor is more likely to take power himself rather than share it with yet another Shogun.

Probably your best bet is to have whoever forces Japan open try to use one of the Daimyos as their puppet / client / stalking horse.

If eg Britain opened up Japan, and the Tokugawas resisted, they might well ally with one of eg tye Southern daimyos, and with western arms and eg naval support, said daimyo might be able to seize power.
