ahc wi Mexico keeps Texas and other lands up to California

As I understand it Mexico had rather poor leadership in the first half of the 19th century. Could they have kept control of the lands they claimed.

Might they have attracted some European migrants, notably Catholic Irish refugees from the Famine?

Can the US reach the Pacific North West in such circumstances.

Would not acquiring territory from Mexico have butterflied the acw?

Or Italians

Or Germans for that matter as well. And, later on, Poles.

Really, religion and language may help immigration, but the biggest draw factor is going to be: is there open land for farming and/or industrial jobs for immigrants to take. If there is, and as long as the government is stable and peaceful, people will come. I mean, there was significant Catholic immigration to the United States - and America wasn't particularly friendly to Catholics at a number of important points.

1849 is too late, but the Irish diaspora started well before that. There was a number of Irish present in Texas before the Revolution

Hugh O'Connor was Spanish Military governor of Texas from 1767 to 1770, then Governor of Yucatan till he died in 1779. find more on him with his more Spanish name, Hugo Oconór

California and Italy basically have the same climate, California could become Nuova Italia in this timeline.
