AHC/WI: Make Texas the center of the film/entertainment industry

Pretty much as the tin says, your challenge is make Texas the center of the film industry. Also discuss any possible implications of this. Does it make Texas liberal in the long run or does it make entertainment industry more conservative?

Terrain?

Where in Texas can you find terrain as diverse as California: sea coast, mountains, farmland, urban, desert, forest, etc.?

Varied terrain: sea coast, swamp, forest, snow-capped mountains, arid cattle-country, etc. is one of the reasons that Vancouver has become "Hollywood of the North."

Sea coast, mountains, farmland, urban, desert, forest, swamp, arid cattle country...so yeah, Texas has all of that too. There's historical reasons why California ended up the entertainment capital of the US (and really, of North America, Vancouver notwithstanding), but the geography of Texas really isn't far behind that of Cali in terms of unique landscapes.

the big reason was that the film industry was hiding from Thomas Edison and his goons who claimed copyright over all motion pictures... that is why Southern California was chosen (and the State of California choosing to ignore Edison and his lawsuit attempts)

I can easily see Texas doing the same. But having lived in both, I would much rather live in Los Angeles than in San Antonio or Austin or Houston (most likely chosen locations) in an era without air conditioning. Texas summers are murder!

Well, either San Antonio or Corpus Christi could be a perfect substitute for Miami as the Hispanic counterpart of Hollywood. I know it's a bit different from the OP's requirement, but at least it involved Texas; after all, the state has a significant Hispanic population, majority Mexicans (Tejano)

Isn't Miami the center of Hispanic entertainment because Cuba was previously the center and they fled there?

Well, Miami was not the only destination of the Cubans fleeing Castro; some went to different Latin American countries: for example, broadcast mogul Goar Mestre went to Argentina, telenovela writer Delia Fiallo worked for some time in Venezuela (or so I thought), etc.

Wasn't there some talk of the film industry leaving California if Upton Sinclair got elected governor in 1934? Have him win, and have them decide to move to Texas.

Yes. That and the people who were involved in the Cuban entertainment industry also helped replicate that model throughout Latin America - cf. Goar Mestre, who modelled several stations elsewhere on his CMQ-TV through Time-Life, such as Rede Globo in Brazil and Argentina's El Trece.
