AHC/WI: (Make) BRICS First World Countries to Compete with the G7

I posted this same thread in the pre-1900 forum in December 2016, but I was recently thinking about this again.

Now that we've got that out of the way:

The BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) are the leading emerging economies of the world as of 2016. The G7 are the first world countries - America, Canada, UK, Germany, Italy, France and Japan (Russia was part of it until being suspended in 2014). How can we make it that BRICS are by alt-2016, no longer emerging but first world economies/countries rivalling the G7? And how might this affect the world as we know it?

Brazil is
You would have to go back at least 200 years, and change them totaly.

I strongly disagree with that.

Russia - with a different 20th Century, it could easily have become a diversified, developed economic beast on par with or superior to the US.

China - a Balkanized China is actually more likely for one of the chunks to be a G7 than the whole nation. Look at Taiwan.

South Africa - possible, though you'd need to either improve race relations a LOT (pre-1900) or wank apartheid.

Brazil - Heck, Argentina WAS a developed nation in the first third of the 20th Century. Brazil has at least that potential.

India - this is a tough one, chiefly because unified India plus Nehru = economic mess. It faces many of the same issues as China.

I disagree on India, having Sardar Patel would have been a solution.he was a reformer and was daring
