AHC/WI: Longer Golden Age of Piracy

More on-again-off-again inter-European warfare that leaves lots of sailors unemployed and keeps privateers popular. The age of piracy ended when the England, Spain, and France took a momentary pause from war long enough to stamp on the pirates.

It's pretty hard to extend it more than a few decades at most. There was too much money involved for the nations to not protect it and the number of places for pirates to hide was quickly shrinking. It's almost easier to end the age of piracy earlier than it is to extend it. There's really no way that I can see to extend it into the 19th C.

And yet piracy continues to this day..

I'm sorry but why is everyone so negative here? It seems any sort of question is immediately shot down as impossible! That's if someone isn't being a wannabee mod and telling people to move threads etc. Have some imagination, people! ;)

Rant over! :)

Only in lawless zones. There's not exactly a major market for the pirates of the Caribbean in the modern day, which is what the Golden Age was all about.

I agree somewhat with this. Even when people specifically say, "ignoring the impossibility" many members tend to jump on the "it can't happen" bandwagon while ignoring the "just suppose it did".

It's the main reason I left a long time ago, I came back to give it another chance. I try to ignore it but it's really annoying how any idea is immediately either shot down, or some other fault is found. It's like people think they seem super intelligent if they just say 'nah can't happen', when in reality they just look like dicks. If they don't like an idea, move along, plenty other threads. You don't HAVE to ruin everyone elses fun you know! ;)

ETA: If someone gives a reasoned explanation of why they personally believe something wouldn't or couldn't happen, fair enough. If they give constructive criticism, or ideas to get around it, no problem. But to just post in a thread to say 'nah' is really irritating, are we just supposed to accept your authority on the matter, and your word is final? To be fair Zepellin probably was quite constructive and explained his reasons, so sorry for taking my rant out on you!

It's a discussion not a lecture. If you don't agree with a negative answer then post your reasons why and posit an alternative scenario. I gave an idea as to how to extend it which is what the challenge called for and think that extending it further is extremely unlikely. Sometime you get a negative answer because the POD or goal is unlikely without either ASB or a different POD. Sure we can make the age of piracy extend all the way up until today if you wanted but it's again, extremely unlikely.

And it doesn't help that PRFU is complaining I'm being negative when after I propose a solution to the challenge he gives an unrelated statement about piracy in the modern day. There's a big difference between piracy and the Golden Age of Piracy. If he offered some kind of constructive criticism that would be different. If you guys don't like people's comments or theories do some research and propose them yourself instead of complaining about what other people write. Quite frankly I prefer getting a reasoned "it's impossible" response to my questions than unrelated complaints about negativity on an internet message board of all places.

If you want to continue the Age of Piracy or have a second golden age I'd suggest moving it to east Asia and the Indian Ocean as trade with China and India increases. The difficulty is keeping Europe from projecting their power into those areas as they did in OTL which would require a. dismantling the Trade companies b. nerfing Europe's navies c. still maintaining the trade routes. The problem is that I can't see a way to do that without approaching the realm of the incredibly unlikely or a POD so early that the whole Age is butterflied away. If you can then more power to you and I'd love to hear your ideas since that's why we're here.
