AHC WI Less influence for Planter class 1789 - 1859

In otl a disproportionate number of Southern slaveholders held higher Federal Offices. They were able to get a lot of what they wanted.

I think that was a factor in Southern leadership finding a President who stood for different interest in 1860

Could it have been different?

Possibly. The smallholders would have to reject the leadership of the planter class.

The first thing that popped into my mind were Wm H Harrison & his friends. They thought to recreate Tidewater Virginia or Carolina in the new Indiana Territory. Harrison's vision was rejected by a mass of semi literate settlers, tradesmen, merchants, & other rif raf who voted in a legislature with other agendas.
