AHC/WI: India split north/south.

As it says on the tin. With a POD after 1750 or so, try to split the former *British India into two states, one north, and one south. You can use Tony Jones's Gurkani Alam as a reference, if you like.

The only other condition for this scenario, is that the India's must generally not be too much more expansive, combined, than what the real world India was prior to the creation of Pakistan and Bangladesh(so, no North Indian Tehran or Thailand, South Indian Indonesia, etc.).

simply make it so Britian doesn't get suzerainty (or anything near it) over the whole Indian subcontinent.

Good point. You could argue Britain created the concept of India. Seperated by race, language and religion, there were few "United India" moments over the past few thousand years.

Without Britain conquering and largely viewing the subcontinent as a unified landmass, I don't think there would be anything resembling a single country there today.

Britain left a central government, though not efficient, was functional enough to conquer any local rulers or populations not inclined to join (Hyderabad).
