AHC/WI: Immigration reform in Obama's first term

Challenge: Under Obama's first term (2008-2012), have immigration reform happen.
He could go for that instead of healthcare, it might even lead to Democrats keeping their majorities in the House and Senate in 2010. This could make the Republicans more inclined to moderate, if they don't have as string a Tea Party wave pulling them to the right.
We could have a different crazy buzz word too, "Obamnesty"
 
The democratic supermajority didnt achieve half as much as it ought to have, unfortunately, and this is one of the few items i think ought to have been tackled aggressively during this period.

Electorally, economically and morally, a clear path to citizenship for adult "illegals" and outright amnesty for children would put the US in a much better position. Not flashy or overnight, but definitely in the long run.

Better position for what, having absolutely no control over immigration? The sweatshop owners of America do appreciate it though.
 
There would be a Republican backlash, but it would likely be a lot less. And perhaps even more Hispanic votes for Dems?
