Whilst it's known that Huey Long did want to take the White House, it's thought that he wouldn't have attempted to do so directly in 1936 after splitting with FDR over believing that the New Deal wasn't radical enough. Long's plan was then to run a third party campaign to split the left-wing vote, ensuring a Republican victory and in the ensuing economic fallout as they start repealing and undoing the new Deal, Long would rise to victory as a Democrat in 1940.

Whilst I don't think this would have been possible, even if Long hadn't been killed in 1935, is there anyway to make it happen? And what would be the subsequent consequences of a one-term FDR and eventual Long presidency in 1940?
