This is from Wikipedia's list of proposed state mergers. As you can gather from this, the borders in Latin America were pretty fluid but the region wound up fragmented. So how can we have it today that Mexico includes all of Central America (besides Panama), Colombia includes Ecuador, Venezuela, and Panama, and Peru and Bolivia are one country? And what would the effects be? Would this reduce US hegemony over the region?
