AHC/WI: Golden Dawn Wins

Golden Dawn is Greece's third largest political party and is considered the world's most powerful Neo-Nazi Party. Using any means necessary, explain how they could come to power, and what would happen if they did come to power.

Frankly it is hard to see how they could come to power, 7 % is probably close to their limit. A neo-Nazi party is going to go only so far in this day and age.

If by some miracle they get inot power and if they try implementing their expansionist policies the Greek Army gets curb-stomped as the entire EU and US back whoever they are invading. Erasing the national debt would mean Greece would be locked out of the financial markets for many years, particularly since the Golden Dawn is so widely hated in the rest of Europe. You could even see trade sanctions.

If even Syriza's surrender to the creditors could not boost Golden Dawn above seven percent, it's really hard for me to see them getting anywhere near coming to power.

What about Jobbik in Hungary? They're a lot bigger, stronger, and nastier and part of a country that's not leaving Europe any time soon. Golden Dawn may be more in the news, but that just says more about the junk quality of 21st century journalism.

Anyway, I think this is a bit recent, might be better in Chat. If not, then success for Golden Dawn requires a depression, same as the fascists needed last time. Let the 2008 financial crisis blow up and you'll have fertile ground.

I don't think the scenario's too far off. Look at the situation: PASOK and Nea Dimokratia basically fucked up the country and lost any confidence they might once have had. So people turned to Syriza as a proper alternative to austerity and 'old-style' politics. Syriza rose to power by promising to end austerity and to broker a new bail out package. Now Tsipras ignored the referendum, and Syriza won again, though with some losses. At the moment, it seems like they're still a party to be trusted by the population. But what would happen if Syriza won't stick to its original platform, but enforces even harsher austerity measures than Nea Dimokratia? This would mean that the supposedly left alternative is gone - which means that people might want to fall for the other extreme 'alternative', the Golden Dawn. The frightening thing is this: if they would water down their neo-Nazi rhetoric and basically portray themselves as the only anti-austerity party, it's not completely impossible. And with Putin they have a powerful backer.

There is already pretty much a depression in Greece.

Give it time SYRIZA might still fubar the situation even worse than before. Problem is that GD still has the cloud from last year's legal problems to deal with even now, so really just how bad the situation is when they win.
