AHC/WI: France sells Louisiana Territory to Ottoman Empire

Please explain me how the Ottomans would sustain colonies in America (except in Age of Empires III): they have no modern navy, they are limited to the Mediterranean... and they have no big population wanting to settle in the new world.

What if they brokered a historical peace with the traditional rivals, the Venetians, and helped to restore their moribund state by giving them business- the Venetian fleet would ship Ottoman settlers to the New World.

Assuming this is before Napoleon conquered Venice's sovereignty.

Again, if the Ottomans had resources to spare

Again, if the Ottomans had resources to spare for such an adventure, which they didn't, one would expect they'd try and use them in places like the Balkans, the Levant, Egypt, or North Africa, where there something resembling social, cultural, economic, and political ties, correct?

Nations generally don't spend lives and treasure for the hell of it, even in the Nineteenth Century - someone in a position of power has to be convinced there's some gain to be made.

Even Napoleon figured out the cost/benefit analysis on Lousiana and Haiti; seems a little much to expect Selim III, who spent most of his reign trying to avoid foreign entanglements by playing the Austrians and Russians, and then the French, off against each other, to have had delusions of grandeur even beyond Napoleon's...;)

Best,
