AHC/WI: Elizabeth the First accepts the Crown of the Dutch

Elizabeth specifically avoided wars as long as she did, to the point where she was classed as 'indecisive', because England's finances would be strained to the limit if she entangled herself in a war with Spain, which was eventually what happened OTL after the defeat of the Spanish Armada.

Further, despite the Dutch's eternal hope, English aid had a way of underperforming and even backfiring when it arrived. Especially when it came under the leadership of one of Bessie's handpicked himbo squad.

LEICESTER: So... Remember how you sent me to help the Dutch...?

ELIZABETH: Yes. How'd it go?

LEICESTER: Not too good... Got a bunch of 'em killed. Got the rest of them hating me.

ELIZABETH: Any chance of winning them over again?

LEICESTER: (laughs) Not the way I left them!

Elizabeth gives a fond shake of her head.

ELIZABETH: Oh, you!

The pair share a hearty laugh.

Elizabeth's acceptance of the Dutch crown would have inevitably led to conflict between the Anglo-Dutch union and the Kingdom of Spain. This would not be in the best interest of the English treasury, nor of the English and Dutch people, both of whom would have suffered horrendously as a result of such a conflict. Elizabeth could by no means be sure of winning such a war, even with the full commitment of English and Dutch military resources to handle the conflict, especially if the Spanish managed to secure allies, which is likely.
