AHC/WI: Denmark joins allies in WWI

Challenge: Have Denmark join the allies in World War 1.

What happens?

Why would they?

They would get smashed by Germany at any point up to 1918 and have had front row seats to history's greatest blood bath for the entire war. Their better of neutral and it was obvious from the beginning that they would be so.

I don't know how, but the result would be a mass run-over by Germany; just imagine WW2 Germany running over Denmark. The Germans had so many men to work with, and the easiest way to get rid of a small nation like Denmark was to easily overrun them, much like they did in Belgium.

Ok for fun:

March 1917, the Allies deperate to cutrail the German submarine offensive and to open communications to a still Allied Russia offer Denmark secretly a slice of Germany including the Kiel Canal and 30 miles past, part of the German colonial empire post war, a share of the captured German naval booty and military equipment post war and a considerable annual subsidy for 50 years.

The Danes agree to enter the war if and when the Americans do and once the French launch their Nivelle offensive, and so on April 22nd, allied Naval Flotillas move into Copenahgen bringing along a British and a French Division.

The shock of all this plus the Greek declaration of war, the fall of Baghdad etc. causes Ludendorf to have a breakdown, the Kiaser to abdicate, the Crown Prince takes over and Germany agrees to end the war under terms of loss of Alcase Lorraine and her colonies, and her fleet, and the OTL 1919 boundy of Denmark (faced with a German invasion the Danes are happy to take only this part of Germany).

Denmark knew very well that neutrality was the only option - ALSO in 1914-18.

Although some of the Danish governments would have liked to get Schleswig back, Holstein was probably more than a challenge.

Even after the war, Denmark opted for a vote to see which way it would go. Probably one of the few one's where the result was not really satisfactory (Germany had moved a lot of Germans into the Danish counties), but was respected.

The Danish government also realised that any major incorporations of non-danish nationalities (e.g. Germans) would not bring any lasting peace.

So, they were rather clear-headed about it all.

If some lunatic should become PM in Denmark, Denmark could join the Allieds on 5 November 1918 and claiming the area down past Kiel (Denmark to the Eider!). Hamburg, Kiel, Travemunde, etc etc, all German speakers would suddenly become Danes. Fascinating, but a bit unlikely!

(I am happy to see we are calling the Danish people "Danes". "Danish" is something else).
