AHC/WI: DDR unifies Germany

As the title says. PoD anytime after the creation of both Germanies, but PoD's that causes WW3 are forbidden.

For some reason, Italy turns communist in the 50s or 60s (big economic crisis, maybe because of an earlier oil embargo due to an English occupation of the Suez Canal). The French communists, enthusiastic about this, follow the Italian example and size power in France.

Surronded by communist countries, the FRG has no other choice than to enact commie-friendly policies - remember that France is one of the occupation powers. The Socialist Unity Party and its western branch, the DKP, slowly take over the FRG institutions and the GDR absorb the whole state in the 1970s.

While this is a way to do it within Europe, America needs to go fully isolationist for this to even have a shot of happening.

The most possible way would be where soviets allow the east germans to have a demilitarized democratic socialist state with multiple competing left wing parties. Instead of jailing Wolfgang Harich they embrace his program of humanistic multiparty socialism in the mid 50s.

I suppose the West German economic recovery in the 50s in this case fails, leading to an eventual victory of left wing parties in government, and eventually, the Soviets sponsor unity because they will be the real puppetmasters.

Weren't the Italian communists close to winning the first elections in Italy postwar? You could have it happen in the '40s.
However, Italy would be left out of the Marshall Plan, so I don't see the rest of the European electorate following through.

The other POD could be no Marshall Plan, but the Marshall Plan makes too much sense, I don't know which kind of POD could avoid it.

But didn't they demonstrate in Hungary and Czechoslovakia they explicitly won't allow that?
