AHC/WI: Danish Brazil

Your challenge, with a POD no earlier than 1300, is to have a scenario where Denmark possesses a colony containing most of colonial Brazil. This has been on my mind for awhile now for no apparent reason other than I feel it would be awesome.

How can this be done, and what effects would it have?

Maybe Denmark holds the Kalmar union together , then is able to afford expeditions to the new world with the purpose of founding colonies .
Maybe Denmark becomes the equivalent of Portugal for this Time Line ?

Have the Swedish rebellion fail and have the Danish integrate their union more closely. At the same time, integrate more of the Hanseatic states into Scandinavia so as to create a bourgeois mercantile class.

With no Swedish rivals and, ITTL, a larger mercantile and military navy, they actually get into the colonial business. Although they do take Vinland for the fish/fur trade, a lot of money is also made on sugar.

Let's say that the Dutch never get free--they go to the Austrian Habsburgs and largely become a part of the Germanies. Have Scotland stay independent and have the London-driven Puritan revolution quashed by absolutism.

Also, have the Danes stay aloof from HRE affairs--an Austria that includes the Dutch may be able to use extra Antwerp money to crush independent Protestant states to a great extent. Or they collapse quickly, and Scandinavia stays trade focused.

Scandinavia, robbed of its two main competitors to a great extent, moves into northern Brazil and the Guyanas, taking advantage of Portuguese weakness to dominate Northern Brasil, the Guianas, and parts of the Caribbean (plus a small Asian empire)

1300 is after the viking age so it rules out a danish uk as a first step to the new world. It's also after the medievel warm period so it pretty much rules out natural expansion from greenland leading to the norse reaching the new world first.

Your best bet is some kind of longer lasting kalmar union, which means denmark isn't so focused on wars with sweden and is rich enough to invest more into colonys than either sweden or denmark did in otl.

They then could take Brazil in some kind of equilivant fight to our timelines 30 years war where the protestant scandivanians fought the catholic iberians in Germany. Brazil at the time was under threat from the dutch so I guess an alt danish empire with a better navy and no need to keep it on the baltic could pose the same threat and do one better?

Well, Huëhuëhuë, I suppose.

I'd love to see how the danes would fare administering a large colonial area, and how the danskzilian culture would form.
