AHC/WI: Concert of Democracies

I don't think the USA would qualify until black people get the right to vote, so it would be a European-dominated club I guess.

That's actually a real cool find. I've never heard of that before. How did you stumble up on it?

I don't know the details of how such an organization could come about, but it would require the feeling that the end of the Cold War marked "the end of history," to quote Fukuyama, would need to be more prevalent so all these democracies have a reason to decide to no longer work with dictatorships. So perhaps at the end of the Cold War, have China fall to the democratic forces during the Tienanmen Square protests along with most of the other authoritarian countries like Myanmar and North Korea along with a real thriving democracy to take control of Russia. This will cause a lot of people to agree that liberal democracy has won the struggle for the world and will give reason for countries to establish this Concert of Democracies (gosh, that even sounds awesome saying it).

I've really liked the idea since I heard of it, especially if it was used to promote democracy. It also might make be a way to weaken authoritarian countries by not letting them in the club and giving democracies a way to avoid working with them.

So this is a indicator of a good democracy that i found. Although not perfect I think it is a good way to figure which nations would belong to the organization.

Green=Free, Yellow=Partially Free, Blue=NOT FREE

If such an organization existed it would be a combination of NATO and the UN with the best of both organizations.

Any organization like this though would never follow that map. It would get politicized by the US almost instantly so they can get their not so free allies (Mexico and Colombia for example) in the organization to utilize their votes. Despite the good intentioned premise, it might end up becoming seen just as a tool of American control.

Would any "green" countries get excluded?

If it was put together right now, somewhere like Hungary or some of the Balkan states might be left out due to their political closeness with Russia, but they might let them in as a matter of consistency. I certainly don't think the US would be open to letting any third party organization decide who is "democratic" enough to join.
