AHC/WI: Bush vs Bush in 2000

Let's say that Jeb Bush wins the governor election in 1994 along with his brother George winning in Texas.

Both are reelected in 1998. And both run for President in the GOP Primary of 2000. Who wins?

How does this affect the general election?

I honestly don't see this happening. One them will be told to wait their turn so as not to screw up the chances of the other one.

Can't see this happening, even if both wanted to run, I'd feel W. would step aside in favour of Jeb, both because of his own deference and probable pressure from HW.

However, if W. wishes to defy this logic (I'd say only 5-15% likely) on a maverick impulse/word from God and want to run like he did in 1994, I'd still wager even then he'd be pressured to stand down for Jeb

I concur, one of them would step aside for the other, rather than "duking it out."

That being said, I don't see anything that would prevent them from being running mates -- Bush^2 in 2000. Doing so wouldn't necessarily "round out the ticket" with someone from a different region or different experience, but Jeb would have been better than Cheney IMNSHO

Considering that the family tried to talk W out of running for governor in 94 as to not mess up JEB' s chances and he decided to do so anyway, I don't see W stepping as if for JEB in 2000 either. That being said, I suspect JEB would stand aside for his older brother in any case. He may be ambitious and the family favorite, but there is no way he would take an open swipe at his brother.

Wow, writing that ... the Bushs are really argue Shakespearean.

I think George would win, as he is a far better at campaigning then Jeb.

That certainly does seem true. Of course I've only really ever watched him on the national level and Donald Trump is sucking all the oxygen out of the race, he might have done better in 2000 with a bit more traditional primary.

George is probably the more charismatic candidate, but the party establishment will probably back Jeb - Florida's a swing state while Texas is a safe Republican state.

George could run as the "Maverick" candidate, drawing support from people who backed John McCain in 2000, and the more conservative primary voters.

The GOP nomination would depend on who wins the all-important "Poppy and Barb" primary...

George had a very good relationship with Barbara, while his relationship with his dad has had some low points, so I'm assuming Barbara backs George while Poppy backs Jeb.

Yet, in '94, Barbara was the one who tried to convince W not to run for Governor because she feared it would ruin Jeb's chances. So, although Barbara and W do have a good relationship, its not without its faults. And, at least at this point, JEB was simply the family favorite to reach the Presidency. That fact alone means that W needed to make a go for it.

And, as I've said, JEB doesn't strike me as the type to really run against his own brother. What ever his own ambitions, I do think he would end up showing deference to his older brother's wishes.
