AHC/WI: 2nd American civil war

could there have been an American civil war in the 20th century? If so, how do you think it would go down? Communist state secession in the 1930s, Racial war in the 1970s, fascist uprising in the twenties?

i don't think there would've been a communist succession in the 30's, but there was a decently large socialist following during the depression so maybe a socialist uprising? but i don't know about Communist.

I doubt there could of been one in the Twentieth Century, there wasn't any real bitter division like there were right before the Civil War.

The way things are going now though, give it a couple of years.

There a TL about a second American civil war called the falcon can't hear

Yeah, but the format of it is pretty consistent with most Great Depression Civil War scenarios even with Huey Long becoming fascist and evil.

Anyway, Kaiserreich also has one although most everyone agrees it's unrealistic although I didn't think it was too bad.

Could a civil war have happened because of the progressive movement? There was a lot of fanatical people during the prohibition movement for instance.

Refresh me on what the Dongfanghong is? I remember his timeline had the Maoist movement gain real steam so is that just a Maoist uprising?

It's a real Maoist-wank - PRC never adopts the Great Leap Forwards, various Communist movements identify themselves as Maoist. The same is the case in the US, where the Maoist movement disconnected but persistent.

In order for radicals on the left to emerge, you need

1. No Teddy Roosevelt, who for the most part satisfied the labor and dampened support for socialism.

2. No Wilson or the red scares, as he worked hard to kill any support for communism

3. Things to, somehow, get worse (presumably during the 1930s)

However, even then this is difficult. The democrats aren't stupid, they'll appeal to the workers and become the progressive party instead, just earlier, if #1 occurs (president Bryan?) And socialism never became very militant in the US.

For a fascist dictatorship to emerge, you need Roosevelt (the other one) to not exist, and someone to botch things so much during the great depression that people would actually support forgoing the democratic process.

All in all, unlikely.
