I've got a relevant poll -- my answer would be, just make sure Hindenburg doesn't run for re-election in 1932, and that whoever succeeds him doesn't appoint Hitler Chancellor. So long as the government is competent enough to fix/weather the Depression, they can survive to present day without issue...
Would there still be a second GW in this scenario?
Hitler killed. East Prussian Weimar remnant under Otto Braun. Unless you count the junta under von Schleicher as the legitimate Weimar government. Which I don't.What was it?
I have an idea for a PoD where the Republic survive, but not as a democracy. It involves Kurt von Schleicher (general and German chancellor at the time) couping Germany in 1933 before the Hitler - von Papen agreement. (the coup would be with silent consent from von Papen and von Hindenburg). Then he crack down on the Nazis and Communists driving Germany into a short 3-way Civil War (Hitler try to flee to Austria but is arrested by the Austrian government and spend decades in prison). After the war crackdowns begin on Social Democrats (the party allowed to exist, but members are harassed), and there is pressure on the right wing parties to unite into a single pro- government party lead by von Papen. In the end Germany end up under a triumvirate of von Papen, von Schleicher and Ludwig Beck (who succeed von Hindenburg as president).
Then of course I would have Anschluss with Austria happen roughly the same time as OTL. And the government would pretty much have a very similar foreign policy to the Nazis, and end up fighting an unwinnable WW2 in the end. However the Weimar Republic would survive to the mid 40s.
I might at some point, but I'd first have to research quite a bit more, and right now I have can't find time for it.Intresting.
Can you turn that in TL?![]()
