AHC: Weimar Germany survives to present day

Your challenge is, with a POD after 1925, to have the Weimar Republic survive in a recognizable form to present day.

I've got a relevant poll -- my answer would be, just make sure Hindenburg doesn't run for re-election in 1932, and that whoever succeeds him doesn't appoint Hitler Chancellor. So long as the government is competent enough to fix/weather the Depression, they can survive to present day without issue...

Would there still be a second GW in this scenario?

Depends on a lot of things -- the government is still going to look to reacquire lost German territory in places like the Polish corridor, but I can see a government headed by, say, Hugo Eckener moving to achieve this primarily through diplomatic means. Another factor is the Soviet Union; could be they get antsy to project power in Europe, but I think it's more likely they'd look to expand influence in China after Japan invades, making that conflict a lot more -- well, "interesting" would be one way of putting it...

Any POD changing the outcome of 1933 elections in a way that allows a Great Coalition of all parties (exept the NSDAP and KPD) to get 50% of the seats in the Reichstag will do (Von Papen was looking forward to it OTL). Seeing that it would only require 2 million Germans to vote differently than OTL, I think that a good POD might be, ironically, allowing for the Anchluss earlier. Since the nazis/fascist/communists only managed to aquire circa 20% of the votes in Austrian elections in 1930, adding the remaining 80% of "democratic" votes from a 3 million voters base, that by itself would give about 2% more votes for the democratic forces in the Reichstag. Combine it with reduced support for the radicals who called for the Anchluss, the 1933 elections with Austria just might give all the democratic parties the 50% they need.

I have an idea for a PoD where the Republic survive, but not as a democracy. It involves Kurt von Schleicher (general and German chancellor at the time) couping Germany in 1933 before the Hitler - von Papen agreement. (the coup would be with silent consent from von Papen and von Hindenburg). Then he crack down on the Nazis and Communists driving Germany into a short 3-way Civil War (Hitler try to flee to Austria but is arrested by the Austrian government and spend decades in prison). After the war crackdowns begin on Social Democrats (the party allowed to exist, but members are harassed), and there is pressure on the right wing parties to unite into a single pro- government party lead by von Papen. In the end Germany end up under a triumvirate of von Papen, von Schleicher and Ludwig Beck (who succeed von Hindenburg as president).

Then of course I would have Anschluss with Austria happen roughly the same time as OTL. And the government would pretty much have a very similar foreign policy to the Nazis, and end up fighting an unwinnable WW2 in the end. However the Weimar Republic would survive to the mid 40s.
