AHC: Wales wins a war against the United States

Get Wales to win a war against the USA. POD can be whenever you want, but the following constraints apply:

  • The two countries must be similar enough in terms of history, culture, and geographical extent to be recognisably the equivalents of OTL's states (so a "Wales" which covers all of Europe would be out, for example).
  • Wales and the United States must be the primary belligerents in the war (a thirty-country coalition which happens to include Wales as one of its minor members wouldn't count).
Other than that, let your imaginations run wild! Good luck. :D

A plague breaks out in the US of A and it kills most of it's people.Wales DOW on the US,walks in and finishes what's left of the US.

the worlds Wales and Welsh come from the Saxon word for foreigneer (same etymology as Wallachia and Wallonia) so techinically all the original inhabitants of Southern Britain were Welsh before the Saxons arrived.

I know you said to not have major border changes, but with a less successfully Saxon invasion it is possible that Cornwall, Devon and Somerset along with most of Northern England and bits of Southern Scotland would be called Wales or Cymru. A Wales of this size would still be a celtic nation and still speak the Welsh languague, England would be destroyed at birth and Wales could one day be a major power

But then again I have broken most of your terms and probably made the USA not exist

After yet another defeat to Wales in rugby, England collapses into anarchy. Wales unites the celtic nations under its leadership then absorbs the former England.

It then launches a surprise attack against America on Thanksgiving when no one is watching and puts a Welsh Flag on the Statue of Liberty. Then declares it won and leaves.

;)

Hmm...

Well clearly Wales has to avoid English conquest. However, the long term prospects for Wales are bleak unless some kind of permanent understanding is reached with England - perhaps a form of vassalage remaining under a Welsh Prince.
-----------------------
During the Age of Exploration England settles colonies in North America, resembling mostly OTL USA. However, Wales also gets in on the action, founding some small colonies in OTL New England called New West Wales (a play on Australia's New South Wales). New West Wales is a profitable colony, albeit it is dwarfed by the larger English colonies to the south and its protection is enforced, in effect, by the English Navy.

After a devastating colonial war between France and England over mastery of Canada, New West Wales serves as an important staging ground for English incursions into French Canada. The end of the war sees England expel French influence from the continent, but the war has been costly for England and its loyal suppliant Wales. Tensions in the English colonies lead to a protracted series of civil disturbances which eventually culminate into a full-blown revolution. During this time, and owing to Wales' small colonial empire, the Welsh Prince pays close attention to affairs in New West Wales and grants a number of significant concessions which results in the colonial subjects being, for the most part, a happy bunch.

Nevertheless Wales is expected to support its benefactor England in the American Revolution and it duly provides material support and military support. While many New West Welshmen hold some sympathies with the American rebels, many also serve alongside English regiments in attempting to suppress the American revolt. During a battle outside of New York with American rebels a Welsh regiment is forced to retreat and the commanding officer decides to burn him supplies and that of the local villages to deprive the Americans of supplies. This affair earns significant condemnation in rebel propaganda, and a famous ballad composed by rebel soldier John 'Jack' Wilson sings of the "War against mother England and her bastard son Wales!"

After several years of protracted warfare, and the intervention of various continental empires, England and the United States negotiate a peace settlement. The independence of the United States is recognised, with England retaining superior trading rights and taking possession of territories to the West. An aggressive American negotiating position disputing the boundary of New West Wales is resisted by England despite the territory in question having originally formed part of the English colonies. Nonetheless the territory was never held by rebel soldiers during the war, and the Americans do not press their claim.

Peaceful relations are restored in the Western Hemisphere and trade is prosperous between the three nations England, Wales and USA. During this time further political concessions are made to New West Wales improving its autonomy, albeit it still forms an integral part of the Welsh state. Relations are generally peaceful with the USA. There is a small minority of New West Welshmen who sympathise with America and desire independence for their own state, this is exacerbated by many "loyalists" who fled from America following the end of the Revolution.

Despite the friendly relations tensions flare again within a generation with the continent of Europe embroiled in a large scale war. England, Wales and a vassalised Scotland fight alone against a resurgent French Republic under the leadership of a militarily capable Senate. England faces a desperate battle against the combined navies of France, Spain and Denmark - which leads them into aggressive press ganging of foreign sailors, notably American sailors. With this outrage against American pride, together with England's isolation in the continental war, the USA uses the opportunity to declare war against Wales and reclaim the disputed territory.

An initial victory for the American army is overshadowed when the English navy brings its formidable fleet to bear along the American coast and shells many cities. A punitive raid against the American capital of Philadelphia is repulsed, which restores American spirits. Nonetheless the war bogs down into stalemate as newly arrived regiments from Wales bolster the defence of New West Wales. With the English Navy continuing to assail the American coast, French reversals on the continent, and a threatened English invasion from Canada, America negotiates a peaceful settlement with England and Wales effectively restoring the status quo. Despite the ambivalent outcome, the war is seen as an important national moment for both America and New West Wales.

The three countries never go to war again, and the disputed territory is eventually settled in 1875 by a joint-judicial review with judges from USA, Canada and New West Wales effectively ruling on a compromise.

The story begins in 1918 after the Germans manage to win a great victory over the Triple Entente thereby ending the war on a relative stalemate with few territorial changes but a large war indemnity from Britain and France. In response to this British colonies start rebelling and the British government raises taxes on the people.

1919: A communist revolution breaks out in Britain and overwhelms the government creating two new states. Communist Britain and Communist Wales. Then America does what it loves doing with communist countries, it invad- err... I mean liberates it. So the Americans declare war on Wales in 1920 and send massive numbers of soldiers there to liberate it. Britain supports Wales as the Welsh flee into the hills and mountains of Wales and wage a guerilla war against the Americans.

Eventually the Americans get sick of this failing war and pull out of Wales after many casualties. Therefore after a 1920s Vietnam, communist Wales and Britian re-unite and start funding communist revolutions throughout Europe. These revolutions also succeed and unite to form one nation they will now call Oceania. Meanwhile communist revolutions break out worldwide and two other nations form: Eurasia and Eastasia. Oceania controls most of the world, Eastasia large parts of East Asia and Eurasia controls Russia, parts of Eastern Europe and bits of central Asia. These nations are then stuck in a perpetual state of war while their governments start creating new forms of the English language to cut down on the possibility of revolution.

It was a bright cold day in April and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith...

Napoleon invades Britain and captures London. The British monarchy flees to Canada and Napoleon sets up the Kingdom of Wales before leaving to invade Russia.

Thomas Jefferson wins over Adams and the U.S. allows the French to outfit privateers and recruit troops. American is drawn into the conflict. In 1813 Wales switches side ala Denmark. America attempts to invade and is defeated

You could combine the two: a top-secret Welsh government department genetically engineers a breed of super-intelligent whales for use in war, and then lets them loose on the unsuspecting US navy...

Well, not technically. It could have taken on the position of Great Britain (Greater Celtica?) and won a war of 1812 style thing.

Probably the most plausible way for Wales to defeat the US.

The biggest obstacle to overcome would, I think, be population. Unless Wales can wall itself off from England and turn into a medieval version of 20th century Japan, it can't compete with American resources.

Somewhat broad-brush, and arguable whether it really qualifies but:
Britain at some point loses a major European war and gets broken apart.
Wales threatens to go Communist/Syndicalist/some other type of socialist, so a coup installs a US-backed dictatorship in Caernarfon. However, their initial forces are insufficient to secure the Valleys, and a revolutionary government is established in, let's say Merthyr just to be different.
A somewhat Vietnam-style war follows, where the revolutionaries are heavily outnumbered by the Americans and are barely able to hold their own capital (which probably ends up moving a couple of times). But the will isn't there in America for an all-out war, and they can't simply destroy the insurgents outside the WSR's own territory either, so it becomes a black hole of lives and money.
The exhausted US eventually withdraws, and the Welsh Socialist Republic easily overruns the tattered remnant armed forces of their client state the Gwerinaeth Cymreig.

Clearly, this is a slightly larger version of "The Mouse that Roared"

An independent, but deathly poor, Wales declares war on the US to get aid money, and lands a handful of archers in New York during a ....
