AHC: Vietnamese Colonization of Philippines and Beyond

What sort of POD or motive would make the Vietnamese (In-Between 500 and 1500 CE) colonize the Philippines, Taiwan and parts of Indonesia and beyond, perhaps all the way to California?

The Vietnamese are difficult you could have a failing dynasty leaves Vietnam post one of their dynastic wars. Alternatively a prince and entourage leave during one of the sustained periods of Chinese rule. All possibilities.

But Kasumigenx has a more interesting idea of a resurgent Cham nation transplanted to another country and waiting for the opportunity to reclaim their ancestral homelands. That's interesting

Read Vietnamese history books, they had great difficulty colonizing small ceded Champa provinces: Viets didn't want to leave their hometowns; and migrant ships capsized due to storm, creating panic among unlucky ones about to be sent south. etc.

The problem is, Southeast Asia during colonial age was too sparsely populated to have a craving for new land, and the Philippines was too far for a hostility to develop.

(Having said that, if Viet Nam Cong Hoa unified the whole peninsular with war butterflied, Vietnam developed into an economic power like OTL South Korea, Philippines might already be under de facto economic occupation by Vietnamese investors.)

So how do you increase the general density/population of Southeast Asia so that Vietnam could colonize OTL Philippines?
