OTL. 1975, the day after a revolutionary holiday a Political Officer on a Soviet Frigate decides to try to inspire a new Communist revolution against the corrupt regime. He leads a Mutiny on board & plans to slip away from the fleet in the Baltic in the morning, sail to Leningrad & broadcast a revolutionary message to the people, echoing the Potemkin.

One of the loyal officers escapes to try to raise the alarm. He isn't believed at first. The Frigate makes it to the Baltic. They have the choice of leaving the radar off & risking a collision in a crowded merchant shipping lane or turning it on & revealing their position. They turn it on, are bombed & recaptured. It's hushed up till the end of the cold war. Officers on board that opposed the mutiny say they believed the Soviet population was in a mood receptive to revolution at the time.

There's a history channel episode thing on it on youtube. It's the inspiration for 'The Hunt for Red October' apparently.

So yeah, if things went differently, how big could Valery Sablin win?

Unreal. Pass by Kronstadt, and even more so enter into the Neva, is impossible.
I think it's a myth. Already at that time heard that Sablin wanted to escape to Sweden.

From what I've read, that's what western intelligence thought at the time. With the end of the Cold War, more information has come out.

This N. Tcherkashin extended this version.;) Do not believe the former political officer. He still argues that the battleship "Novorossiysk" blew the Italians.

Here's another idea....

What if he somehow manages to arrange assignment to a Soviet ballistic missile submarine, say a Delta class boomer. A disillusioned, angry guy in control of 16 ballistic missiles; that's a recipe for something interesting......
