AHC: USA gets Imperial with South America

No, the Gadsden Purchase was purchased, as were Louisiana and Alaska; Texas was annexed by treaty with an independent republic; the Old Northwest, Old Southwest and Oregon Country were organized via treaty with Western powers.... so, no, not EXACTLY the "norm."

And in terms of territorial acquired through war, the "thinly populated land" this is different from the norms of the other European settler societies in what way, exactly?

Best,
Oh, I'm not arguing that it's different when they grabbed California Et Al to the other powers. It's pretty much business as usual.
I'm just arguing that the US did on at least one occasion launch a fairly large scale land grab (albeit of areas low in population) against a fellow clearly-sovereign nation (and the South argued for annexing the lot) so - when combining that with the repeated newspapers calling for annexing Canada for about a century post-1776, it's clearly not "waay outside any norms of American politics from 1776 to today".
It's just - you know... something they occasionally considered but only rarely did.

Which is fine.
