AHC: USA and Austria-Hungary allied

With a POD anytime after the formation of the USA make it so that the United States of America and the Austro-Hungarian Empire are in a common alliance.

Now that is bloody difficult. You have to overcome the deep set US hostility to alliances and foreign entanglements, especially in Europe and then get them allied to a power in central Europe.

Only thing I can think of is something between 1848-1916 that keeps the AH empire in existence and preferably markedly better health and that you still get a super-power Russia [imperial or communist] which, say after defeating Germany in a prior war that draws the US in, becomes the main opponent of the US. In which case A-H may well become a major ally. Difficult to explain how A-H stayed out of this war with Germany or escaped major destruction in a conflict serious enough to drag the US in. [If they aren't I can't really see them involved in a European alliance afterwards]. Also to involve the US heavily in Europe means the serious reduction at least of British power.

The only thing I can think of is that we get a WWI equivalent with Britain and Germany v France, Russia and later the US, possibly with Austria neutral. Britain and Germany are defeated, probably with France however being conquered and Russia seriously mauled beforehand. Then Russia and the US as the main winners fall out.

Austria unites Germany, creating some sort of pseduo-federal empire stretching from the Baltic to the Black Seas where the Hungarians take a dominant role in the east while the Germans control the west, but ethnic/religious minorities are, for the most part, tolerated fairly well. WWI-analogue comes along and the US is drawn onto the side affiliated with this Hapsburg empire. Against all odds Vienna weathers the storm without fracturing along ethnic lines, and the two rising powers are allies of convenience against the rising tide of communism (where-ever that might be...)
