AHC: US president a member of the Libertarian Party

The challenge is to have a sitting US president be a member of the Libertarian Party. The POD must be after December 11th, 1971, the date of the foundation of the party.

I don't think that this is current politics. If it is please tell me.

It is semi-plausible that some small-l libertarian could get elected president, but only if he runs as a Republican--which would require him to quit the LP if he had ever belonged to it.

Considering that Johnson/Weld didn't get a single state in a Clinton vs. Trump election, you'd probably need a race between Richard Spencer for the Republicans and Louis Farrakhan for the Democrats to make this happen.
