AHC: Uber Australia

The challenge here is to make Australia as large and as powerful as possible between a start date of 1900 and end date of 1965.

Im not sure how plausible post war land grabs are for the colony but I've posted a map of oceania circa 1900 for measure.

Have the 'Populate or Perish' post WW2 immigration boom occur after WW1 along with parallel nation building.

You can have New Zealand join the Australian federation, since this was actually considered.

Less plausibly, they hold onto New Guinea and make it a state.

A larger population is a problem because of the ecology of the continent. They arguably have too many people as it is.

Australia today could support 60+ million people without any changes to its agriculture; watering them is relatively easy compared to the water needed for that same agriculture/industry. It could be achieved without any particularly expensive infrastructural changes such as water tanks/people living in the North/North-East. The specific number that would have been possible between 1900-1965 is debatable, but it's reasonably likely that a population of at least 20 million or more would have been possible from the turn of the century onwards. Getting those people is the trick.

One way would be to simply increase immigration from Europe, in particular British immigration which was acceptable to Australia at the time. Even better would be to somehow make North America unattractive to this immigration, perhaps a combination of stricter post-WW1 immigration restrictions in the US and Something Bad happening in the UK to encourage migration?

The other obvious but difficult method is to reduce prejudice against other Europeans or even Asians earlier. How this is done at this late date I don't know, at least done in time for a significant change for 1965, but reduced migration restrictions/prejudice on arrival would create a much larger pool of potential migrants. And once the population is there, greater power will follow. Like Japan, Australia has the advantage of being far from any rivals and its relative power would be magnified in the South Pacific. Even with 20 million people in say, 1940, Australia would probably have more capacity to influence all of south east Asia than any European country, at least on a material scale if not political.

Low intensity nuclear exchange in Europe. Tons of immigration to safer Australia.
Dutch East Indies, New Guinea, New Zealand, Australia and a few other islands get incorporated together as European countries can't maintain their colonial holdings or navies.

One route might be to have the Australian-New Zealand federation take place and to have the Dutch on the German side in WW1. That is a big ask but a really bad Boer War and any hint of Belgium aspirations to annex part of Southern Limburg and the Schelde islands (as what happened post WW1) - perhaps as a reverse Zimmerman telegram ;) might persuade them to throw in with the Central Powers. Which could end up with Dutch East Indies being mandated to Australia after WW1.

That's a recipe for an uber Indonesia...

Best,

Australia discovers a technology that allows it to control animals. It starts a war unleashing its new secret weapons - crocodiles, red back spiders and drop bears - and quickly overwhelms South East Asia.

Let's see. First off you would have to include NZ and let's say Fiji as well in the Federation, which will help. Then somehow have the White Australia Policy not get past Parliament, having New Zealand would help with that. Then somehow have PNG be integrated into Australia, that would boost the population enough to make Oz more powerful. Oh also no WWI or a less devastating one, that war cut the best of a generation down.

Fiji, PNG and to a lesser extent New Zealand are economic basket cases that would drag the rest of Australia down, getting Fiji ad NZ at Federation and making PNG a state later most likely make Australia any more powerful today.
